A Devotion from Divine Dining


My Do It Myself

  

“For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.” Isaiah 41:13





     My oldest daughter and son-in-law bought an inside basketball goal for our first grandchild, their niece. We put it away and brought it out for each one thereafter. By the time, my third and youngest grandchild was born, the basketball goal was worn, but still usable. The pen that held it to a certain height kept getting lost, so I hid it. My grandson loved that goal. By age two, he was wise to my tricks of hiding the pen. He’d drag the whole contraption into the living area and say “pen,” indicating I should get the lost part. He would take it from my hands and say, “My do it myself.”



     He would aim and miss several times. I’d say, “let Mimi do it.” But no, “my do it myself.” In God-given grandma wisdom, I covered his right hand with mine and guided the pen into the hole. His eyes lit up. Then, he swatted away my hand and reaffirmed, “my do it myself.”



     What a picture of us at times. We’re taught to be independent. When faced with a compulsion we can’t control, we argue with ourselves saying, “I’m an accomplished, capable, intelligent woman. I can get on a diet, stay on it and control this thing.” But, we try and try, and can’t. No matter how many times we tell God with our actions and words, “my do it myself,” we can’t.



     Finally, God holds our right hand and puts the pieces together. But, do we still shake His hand away and say, “my do it myself.” We can’t. God help us. We never can.





Prayer: When I try to walk in my own power, remind me of my grandson slapping away my hand. God, I need You to hold my right hand.

You Might Be a Christian if ...

I love meeting new friends. What a special treat when they are Christians. Now, how could I tell that? Do they tell me, "I've been saved by Christ." No, that's not necessary. Then, what's the test?

By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.
                     John 13:35

Recently, I was asked to speak to the Healthy Living class at First Baptist of Dallas, Texas. What a humbling experience that these people would ask me to give my testimony based on reading my book, Divine Dining. A week before the date, a Sunday school teacher called to invite me to also teach her class on discipline in general while I was visiting their church.

I arrived at the big, downtown church wondering what I would encounter, but the phone calls from three different ladies encouraged me that they were warm, caring people.

They had directed me to a door where there was a fountain. One lady told me, "You won't miss it. The fountain is huge." And, she was right. Many people take photos here. I borrowed this one, since I forgot to snap one of my own while I was there. Scripture verses surround the base. Pictures of this fountain flash on the screen in the worship service while the choir and orchestra lead the congregation in song.

Two ladies waited inside the door with smiles and handshakes for my husband and me. We followed them through halls, up an elevator, and into a magnificent auditorium. Many people greeted us, some ushers, many just those coming to church like us. We took a seat near the middle where more and more greeted us and made us welcome.

A full orchestra played a majestic melody. The choir on a floor rising above the instruments began to sing. To the sides, flashed videos of the fountain and scenes around the church.

Somewhere about that time, I realized Jesus was right there with me, letting me know these were Christians, just like the wonderful congregation I left behind at Heritage Church, Wichita Falls, Texas.


Pastor Ron Jeffers preached a thought-provoking sermon reminding me of the messages I get from our pastor, Ron Barnard.


Jeff Foxworthy has made a fortune by stating that "You might be a redneck if ... "

I propose that "You might be a Christian if ...
   the Spirit of Christ shines in your smile
   the beauty of Christ lights up your eyes
   the kindness of Christ shows in your actions
   the truth of Christ's witness is revealed in your words
This was 7 of the ladies that organized and made that event possible for me. I saw Christ in their devotion and kindness. Thank you, ladies.

These four things were evident in the ladies of the Billman Sunday School class and the Healthy Living class and many other at First Baptist, Dallas, on March 9, 2014. That same Spirit hovers in Heritage Church's lobby, and pews, and platform every Sunday. I pray that I would be charged with acting like Christ.

Set Goals and Dreams for 2014

Have you set new goals for 2014, yet? Today is February 1. It's past time.

My devotion book, Divine Dining, offers these suggestions in the devotion for December 31.

 
But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit, for the Spirit searcheth all things, yeat the deep things of God. 1 Corinthians 2:10

      Tomorrow we begin a new year. New Years Resolutions may not work, but setting well-thought-out, written, and prayed-over goals do. It’s time to evaluate the illness that tied us in knots. Has God brought an emotional healing during this year? Has He started a new work? Have you hit bottom where you’re ready to begin?

     Wherever you are on the path, it’s time to focus on where you want to go. In the new year, will it be God’s Way, or My way for you?
    
     Go through these steps.

 

     Decide if you’re ready to submit to God

     Read this daily devotion book in the new year and

          everything else that will help, especially the Bible

     Energize through leaving off sugars and fats that drain

          your vitality.

     Admit your powerlessness and Ask God to take over your

          life.

     Mentor others as you receive your day-by-day healing.

 

 Here's another example of how to DREAM. 

 

    Discern God’s will daily.

    Record your progress and reaffirm God’s leading.

    Eat the Word. Make it part of you.

    Associate with friends that pray and encourage.

    Maintain contact with God regardless of what’s going on in

           world.


Prayer: I can’t. God can. Lead me in the coming year.

My 10 Best Tips for Losing Weight

In October, many of us run a mad dash to lose weight before the holiday season. Even ones that try to maintain their weight loss are thinking of ways to keep down the pounds before holiday temptations seduce us to indulge.

Time to think of ways to help. Here's my best 10 tips:

1. First Things First
      Give your body what it needs, give to God your worship and devotion.
      Often we put food on the throne of our lives. No one can lose weight this way.
      Through God comes power.

2.Write
       Stress, loneliness, boredom, depression; these are things that drive us to overeat.
       Get in the habit of writing out your problems every day. In this way, you release them to God and no longer need worry.

3. Be Colorful
        My husband compliments me on my colorful plates. Vegetables and fruits add orange, red, yellow, green, and purple to your meals. Strive for 5-6 servings of vegetables and fruits every day.

4. Tip the Milk
        (Fat-free, of course) Have 2 servings of dairy a day. Stick with low fat yogurt, cheese, milk. Studies prove we lose better with dairy on our menu.

5. Move It, or Lose It
        Activity is important. Weight loss comes from eating less calories than we use up daily. If we use more calories, guess what, we get to eat more. Leave it to a recovering compulsive overeater to utilize that. If you have leg pain, strengthen your upper body with exercise. If you're overweight and out of shape, take short, slow walks to begin. Do something if at all possible.

     Extra benefits to activity are to lower blood pressure, strengthen muscles, relieve depression, increase metabolism, and get our minds off our loneliness.

6. Divine Dining
      Okay, I'm prejudiced since I wrote the devotion book Divine Dining, but long before I wrote this book, I read and still read excerpts from inspirational books that keep my mind on the goal of eating unto Christ. 

    “For wherever I am, though far away at the ends of the earth, I will cry to you for help. When my heart is faint and overwhelmed, lead me to the mighty, towering Rock of safety.” Psalm 61:2 Life Recovery Bible
 
     Overeating slows our productivity and causes sluggishness and a bad attitude. Our salvation comes not from extra snacks or scrumptious desserts. In devouring these things, we put them in the place of God, but only the one true God can satisfy the weakness of our heart or restore the joy of our lives.

7. Get Help
     Find a support group to encourage you. Whether you go to Weight Watchers, a TOPS group, Overeaters Anonymous, or a Christian weight loss group, the support of others who walk where you walk keeps you encouraged, your determination bolstered.
 
8. New Use for the Frying Skillet
      Refuse to fry meat or veggies. Instead, spray that pan with no-fat cooking spray, put on a lid, and steam those veggies, or stir-fry them with meat. Cook that fish with healthy, good-tasting olive oil.
 
9. Really? Do I have to use Calories on Oil?
      Health studies show healthy oils like canola, olive, safflower benefits our health with Vitamin E and fatty acids. The thing I like about them is simple. When I eat two teaspoons of oil a day, I don't get hungry.
 
10.Delete the Sugar, Decrease the Salt
      I'm a sweetaholic. I do best leaving sugar out altogether, but it lies hidden in pasta sauces and prepared foods. Watch the labels. God expects us to be responsible for what we put in our body. It is the temple of God.

Ask the True Expert

We can't always trust our GPS. The helpful instrument is only as good as the information entered and the updates added. Sometimes, that can be wrong.

When my husband and I headed off for our trip to Yellowstone, our first stop to spend the night was Raton, New Meixco. A friend recommended a small RV park there by the name of Summerlan. We entered the address into our GPS and followed the directions. We came into the town on Highway 87. The sweet, feminine voice of our GPS advised us to turn right in one quarter mile. After that distance, the right turn entered Highway 25.
      Our guide told us to take that first exit and go over the interstate highway.
      "Ah, I said, it must be on the other side of the interstate."
      But, on the other side was other businesses, and no RVs. We again reached Highway 87 at the corner of the McDonalds Restaurant. Then, we spotted the sign that gave the street name: Cedar St., the street address of Summerlan RV Park.
     Our GPS guide remained silent.
    "I'm taking it," my husband said. After all, there was no street on the other side of 87 and the GPS had told us to turn right.
     So, we turned.
    We drove...and drove...and drove, but found nothing but residential.
    "The numbers are getting smaller," my husband said. "We're lost."
    When all else fails, call the source, so I dialed the number for Summerlan RV Park. A nice lady understood exactly what happened. She tried to explain it, but her directions were contrary to our
GPS.
     "I'll stay on the line," she said with a sensitive, thoughtful voice. Her words guided us to the other side of Highway 87, the other side of Highway 25 and to the left.
     There before us spread a small, but welcoming sight, Summerlan RV Park. Though it was raining, that sweet lady met us with an umbrella and helped my husband inside to sign the papers and get our RV space for the night. She may not have had the tech knowledge wrapped up in a GPS, but she owed the park and knew all about it.

Sometimes, it's like that in life. Burdened down with depression or turmoil, we seek help and follow advice from so-called experts. We read books on the topic, we listen to speeches, we counsel with ones who supposedly have the answers. When all else fails, we read our Bible or pray. The true expert (God) created us and knows all about us. His answers, His advise, His directions will always be correct.

This is not to say that psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, preachers, teachers, or authors who are expert in their field don't have a place or a need. Our GPS has been our guide in several cities in the past. Without it, traversing unknown area would've been difficult. My point is that to be sure the help we receive is right, we must go to the source.

To the point above, I add this footnote. I'm one of those so-called expert authors. My book Divine Dining: 365 Devotions for Healthier Weight and Abundant Wellness gives advice for losing weight God's way. My own weight loss journey makes me an "expert." However, if you suffer from compulsive overeating, seek out the Bible and talk with God to be sure of getting wisdom for your unique lifestyle.

Sovereignty

The Kingdom of God is not a democracy.

I am God and there is no other.
I am God, and there is none like Me.
I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come.
My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.
                                                                     Isaiah 46: 9-10

America is a republic. We have no king. We run the country with democratic ruling. We vote on laws, we protest ones we don't like, we elect those that have the say over our lives.

In the Kingdom of God, He is King.  What He says will happen regardless of the way we believe it should be. If you don't think this, then you have yet to be knocked down by trauma. All it takes is one time. Sickness or disability strikes you. A child or grandchild dies. A tornado rips away your house and all your belongings. Then we realize, we only have two choices; to accept God as sovereign and trust Him to mean us good, or to fight and rebel which will end in our ultimate defeat.

Our resolve should be to trust in the one who was before time begun and who has the final say. We can't understand the Mind of God. It's far above our human comprehension. We can't see the future or the repercussions of our decisions, but God can. He leads with the end result in His plan.

For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.
                                                                     Isaiah 55:9

A few years ago,  one of Kathy Macias' online devotions explained a Dennis the Menace cartoon that she had read. I shall never forget the picture it reveals. The little guy is kneeling beside his bed, cowboy hat askew, and plastic gun still holstered around his waist as he folds his hands in supplication, and says, "I'm here to turn myself in."

If you're going through struggles today, remember the posture we must take; head bowed, all fight gone, submitted to our Sovereign God.

(Just a note: 2 of my favorites are highlighted today; one of my favorite books in the Bible, Isaiah, and one of my favorite authors, Kathy Macias.)

The time when I had to bow to God in submission and realize it was all in His hands was when we lost our 8-day-old granddaughter. All I could do was fall on my face before God.

Summer Eating

SUMMERTIME! What does that mean for you? Does it mean BALLGAMES? MEMORIAL DAY? WEDDINGS? REUNIONS? GARDENING? THE SWIMMING POOL? BBQs? ROAD TRIPS and VACATIONS? Now is the time to PLAN AHEAD for the upcoming summer season.

 NO MORE EXCUSES!!!

Savor the summer and make it last with healthy eating and wise choices while we focus on fun, not food.


If you are like me, you have a list of summer chores to do. I am excited to get going on several projects, but when I think of ALL the chores and projects I need to do, I get discouraged and want to procrastinate. There are also fun things I want to do this summer, so I shall look at those as rewards for doing what's necessary. I can work on tasks one day at a time, chunk them down, and reward myself (not with food) when each job gets done. I have some resting to do as well because that's all part of the summer routine...to refresh myself mentally and spiritually.  Summer offers many opportunities to move more. Think of your tasks as extra activity.

 

Where does watching what we eat fit with these busy months called summer?
 
1.     Set a goal for our weight by October.

2.     Break that into bite-size stops along the way.  (Pun intended).

3.       Reward ourselves with NON-FOOD rewards for our day-by-day accomplishments.

4.      Move more and eat more summer produce.

5.      Have fun.

6.      Enjoy summer.

 
Don’t use summer as an excuse to overeat. Don’t get the “vacation mentality.” Breaking your routine in work or school schedules doesn’t require a break from relying on God to lead us to healthy lifestyle choices. Wellness living enhances vacations and BBQs.

Let's have the BEST summer ever...healthier...fitter...and journeying to our goals. Proclaim this the summer of God and me defeating this “vacation mentality” for good.

 

Pray for help….

Choose life….

Rejoice!

 
Ready….

Set….

Swim!

Or walk, or jog, or bike, or climb a mountain….

THE NEXT BIG THING

  I answer ten questions about my next book in progress, then pass the baton on to two more authors. It’s loads of fun and you never know what you might find out about an author’s book.
So here we go!
What is the working title of your next book?
A Ghost for Shelley
Where did the idea come from for the book?
After 4RV released Victoria and the Ghost last year, I was asked if there was a sequel coming. I decided there should be and started at work writing it. In Victoria and the Ghost, Shelley Halverson is the girl you love to hate, the country girl who gives city girl, Victoria, a rough time. I thought what if....? I find it fun to play that game. What if Shelley got moved to the city? What if the move made her feel ashamed of her actions toward Victoria? What if she fell for a rich city boy that had everything when she had nothing.
In what genre does your book fall?
Inspirational YA with paranormal elements
What actors would you choose to play the part of your characters in a movie rendition?
Amy Adams as Shelley. Adam Senn as Colson, the hero.
What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?
A guilt-ridden country girl, forced to move to Dallas, confronts betrayal, arrest, and a loss of faith but meets a jet-set jock with a heart for God, and a ghost with a message just for her.
Who is publishing your book?
4RV Publishing (I hope). I submitted the first 3 chapters and synopsis and received a request for the full manuscript. I'm in the process of doing a final editing of it before I send it. I hope it's good enough since they published Victoria and the Ghost and this is a sequel.
How long did it take you to write the first draft of the manuscript?
I began Sept., 2012 and ended April, 2013 so seven months. However, I do many projects at the same time, so I wasn't always writing on this one. My non-fiction devotion book Divine Dining came out in Dec., 2012, so I also worked promotion on both of my books during this time.
What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?
Live on Hold  by Beverly Stowe McClure and the Laurel Shadrach series by Stephanie Perry Moore.
Who or what inspired you to write this book?
The what if question.
The first book explored a teen's view of a mother's rejection and a world with no friends because of being moved from city to country. A reverse viewpoint drew me to the sequel. Another thing that brought about this story is hearing of struggles with teen self-mutilation. I discussed the reasons and forms with our church youth pastor, and I sought to help the reader understand this progression in a teen.
What else about the book might pique the reader’s interest?
The proverbial opposites-attract love story. Colson hates being loved for his money and his family connections. Shelley hates being classified as a freak because she comes from the country.

Little Is Much

But me, I have little to offer
Though I follow the Lord's command
But even little can be much
When put into Jesus' hand.    

Jesus changes things. In His hands, small insignificant seeds of obedience flourish and a small amount of bread feeds thousands.    
 

 
God magnifies little changes in anything we do. When I viewed my two-hundred-fifty pound body, losing enough weight seemed like a colossal feat.

I reached the point where I admitted my powerlessness and turned the problem to the Lord. In His hands, it's amazing what can be accompished. Change what you can, and wait for God to move.

God is the author of growing small things into big and big things into small. Look at the seeds we plant that become mighty crops. God points out the smallest seed of all as His example.


Then came the disciples to Jesus apart, and said, Why could not we cast him out?

And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain. Remove hinder to yonder place; and it shall remove, and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
                           Matthew 17:19-20

    My positive thinking (believing I can do it) is as a mustard seed in the hands of the Lord.
Thought to remember:

Food is not the cure for your pain.

Freedom, not bondage, is what we seek.
 
I asked my Divine Dining class this week what changes they'd made since we started the class to help them live a healthier life. Here's a few of the answers.
    1. I start my day with prayer.
    2. I've stopped eating after dinner except for maybe a fruit.
    3. I'm eating smaller portions and more vegetables.
    4. I think I'm more conscious of how important it is to God.
