How Can God Help With Weight Loss?

Many Christians fight weight. In fact, those in the congregations of protestant churches fail at weight watching more than the general public. Our pews are full of overweight people.

Why? Have we forgotten?

For with God nothing shall be impossible.    Luke 1:37

I can do all things with Christ who strengthens me.  Philippians 4:13

But, what does that look like? How can God help with weight loss?

1. God has the power  to cause you to lose weight..

A compulsive overeater like myself is powerless over certain foods. I can't leave them alone. I can't fix things in my life. What a relief to roll the responsibility on the Lord's strong shoulders!

The moment we admit we can't do it is the moment we gain God's power. The lack of overeating relates exactly to our spiritual condition.

My grace is sufficient for thee, for My strength is made perfect in weakness  II Corinthians 12:9

For years, I prayed, "Lord, take away the compulsion to overeat, take away my cravings, take away my yearning for sweets." It never happened. Why?

After praying that prayer, I went about doing it my way, starting a new diet, joining a new club, finding the latest fad and relying on my will power to lose weight.

God showed me I was doing it backwards. Instead, put God on the throne. Bow to what He wants.  Give up your strong willpower that's causing you to fail.

Read God's Word, pray, and meditate daily. That's the source of positive power.

2. God gives the desire for you to lose weight.

When our desires runs contrary to what God wants for us, God can rekindle the want-to. In Mark 9, a man brought his demon-possessed son to be healed. This seemed like an impossible situation. Even the disciples could not help them. Only Jesus. The father said to Jesus, "I believe. Help Thou my unbelief."

Have you ever prayed for desire? for more belief? for greater trust. Even the faith to be saved comes as a gift from God. Jesus said that even a small amount (the size of a mustard seed) allows us to move a mountain.

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God   Ephesians 2:8

And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.
                                                                                  Matthew 17:20

A mustard-size portion of faith can move a mountain of weight

It took me two and a half years to lose ninety-five pounds. Later, I lost another five.  I prayed like Jesus prayed.

Not my will, but Thine be done. Luke 22:42

3. God gives the wisdom for us to lose weight.

When I was losing weight, God ordered my steps. He provided insight into how to handle difficult eating situations. We eat out 2-3 times a week, more when we're out of town. God taught me the value of sharing a meal, bringing half home, or ordering an appetizer instead of an entrée.

I tried new vegetables and prayed to find ways to eat them. God would guide me to a book, an encouraging word, or a recipe that helped.

Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.”                                                                 Corrie ten Boom

God made your body. He will direct you to the answer day by day.

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
                                                              Proverbs 3:5-6
