A New Release for Author, Christine Lindsay & A Giveaway

Today, I welcome to Writing with God's Hope blog inspirational author, Christine Lindsay. She tells us about her WILD, TECHNICOLOR IMAGINATION and shares her heart. Lindsay truly "writes with God's hope."

As a child I was constantly getting into trouble because I was one of those dreamy kids always lost in my imagination. Later as a professional fiction writer I discovered that my wild, technicolor imagination was actually a god-send.

But let’s face it, some of us have tough childhoods. Maybe that’s why I was always retreating into my imagination. My dad was an alcoholic, no need to go into detail, but learning to overcome childhood challenges through my faith in Christ taught me to believe in happy endings.  

Mix that with a fascination for exotic India during British colonialism and I came up with  Twilight of the British Raj—a trilogy of historicals that I like to call Big Love Stories.

My critique partner describes my brand (my promise to my readers) as the following:

“Wonderful historical detail and historical events colliding into the heart of deep psychological and relationship drama. Rounded characters, profound spiritual threads, sacrifice and satisfying endings.”

Wow, isn’t that nice of her to say that. But really I took instances from my own background, my dad’s drinking, his abuse of my mother, various types of trauma in other people’s lives, and came up with a British and American family saga that shows how the family curse of alcoholism can follow people, but more importantly how that can be overcome and lives and family find healing. I set it all in India between the first two World Wars as India was fighting British for her independence.

Throw in handsome, dashing British Cavalry officers, gorgeous horses, Gandhi, a Russian spy, beautiful Indian women in their saris, the beauty of tropical India, a cholera epidemic, cyclones, missionaries, and American and British women who overcome tough obstacles and find love and joy, and you have my three books in that series Shadowed in Silk, Captured by Moonlight, and Veiled at Midnight. 

What can I say—it was a blast writing them. And now it’s time for me to retreat back into my imagination and write the next series.

Miriam rails against the separation of the land of her birth, but is Lieutenant Colonel Jack Sunderland her soulmate or a distraction from what God has called her to do?


Christine Lindsay was born in Ireland, and is proud of the fact that she was once patted on the head by Prince Philip when she was a baby. 10 Options Instead of a Snack

Here's my ten options to get past the hunger besides having a snack.

1.     Take a short walk

2.     Call a friend.

3.     Chew gum

4.     Drink water

5.     Don’t eat to relax. Instead relax before you eat.

6.     Take a short time to do a chore you’ve been putting off.

7.     Brush your teeth.

8.     Work on a crossword puzzle.

9.     Women, put on some makeup or change clothes.

10.    Turn on radio and dance to a tune.

Snacks aren’t bad. In fact, in some ways, snacking can be your friend in weight loss. Studies show no link between losing weight and having snacks. Often, the snackers lose better.

Must you go a long time between lunch and dinner, or dinner and bedtime?

When I worked, my lunch hour was 11:20 to 12:20. Then, I would get off work somewhere between five and seven, depending on the patient load at the doctor’s office. When I reached my house in the evening, I was ravenous.

Solution: I saved something for a snack about four.

Snacks come in three forms:

Savory, salty, and sweet. Which do you prefer?


It could be different on different days.

It could be a combination. This often works for me.


Plan a snack once or twice a day for when you need it. Each lifestyle is different. Each person is different. Even a different time in life might change our times and our choices.


Now, that I’m retired, I eat dinner earlier, which I much prefer, but sometimes, eating dinner about five-thirty is so long before bedtime that I need a seven-thirty snack. (I still, most of the time, require a mid-afternoon snack, but sometimes, it’s only a glass of Crystal Light or a diet soda.)


Here’s some snacking suggestions:


1 cup broth soup              
1 T. peanut butter

Boiled egg                        
small salad

Light cheese sticks  
tortilla with 1 T 2% fat cheese

Light beef jerky                       
celery or carrot sticks                2 T. hummus

    With 1 wedge Laughing Cow



Chips, 1 oz. not over 100 calories          
  1 oz. Pretzels

2 rice cakes
6 reduced-fat wheat thins

2 peanut butter/cracker sandwiches      
6 light Triscuits

4 Rye wafers                         
3 cups microwave popcorn

Large dill pickle                       
palmful of sunflower seeds in shell

 2 T. mixed nuts                               



Fresh fruit                     non-fat yogurt

2 Blue Bunny fudge lites         7 dried apricots or figs

3 T. raisins                    ½ cup fruit cocktail

1 cup thawed frozen strawberries   
2 T. fat free cool whip

½ cup canned pineapple in own juice  
½ c. natural applesauce

10  caramel corn mini rice cakes       4 hard candies

1 60 calorie Jello pudding    1/16 of a round angel food cake

10 plain or peanut M & Ms (if you can handle them)    

5 large marshmellows                   2 low fat graham crackers

Smoothie with 1 cup skim milk & fruit



Unlimited Snacks:

   Carrot or celery snacks

   Red pepper slices

   Cherry tomatoes

 Sugar free jello
Tip: Nutritious snacks are more satisfying than junk food.

Jennifer Slattery Talks About Her New Release

I asked Jennifer how she came up with the idea of Intertwined.

I’m often asked how I get ideas for my stories, and I rarely have an answer except to say I’ve always had an overactive imagination. This can be a good thing—when it comes to writing. This can also be a bad thing—when someone I love is late returning home and hundred’s of what-ifs dominate my thoughts.


For this story, the idea largely came from a friend. One day I posed a question on Facebook. I don’t recall what it was. I’m sure it was crazy-important, like where could I find the best salmon in Omaha or what recipes should I include in my week’s meal plan.


A friend from church responded, “Organ donation.”


Um… what?


A moment later, she left another comment, saying she’d completely misread my question. She’d thought I was asking for story ideas. Not sure how she got that out of “Tuesday’s dinner”. Later, we laughed about it and moved on.


Maybe a month later, I woke with a woman’s story unfolding in my mind. I knew her struggle, her inner lie, what her relationship with her parents was like, and how and when her husband had abandoned her.




I also knew she had a crazy-tough job, a job I wasn’t even aware existed prior to meeting my Facebook friend.


Tammy Kuhn, mother of two, is an organ procurement coordinator. Who was abandoned by her husband for another woman.


That kind of history is crazy hard for any woman to weather, but for Tammy, it’s the type of blow that could threaten to destroy everything—her job, her kids… her relationship with her mother…


I knew I had to write her story. I had to show not only her struggle, but also her hope. The deep healing that can come when people learn to lean on one another with authenticity and grace.


But I knew I couldn’t write this story alone. I know almost nothing about the medical field. The insider language alone is enough to make my head spin. So, I called my friend, Ami Koelliker, who was working as an organ procurement coordinator at the time, and said, “Remember when you suggested I write a story on organ donation.”




“Well, I think I’d like to. But… I’m going to need help.”


“Of course.”


“I mean a lot of help.”


Though she readily agreed to help me, I’m certain she had no idea just how much help I’d need. For the next six-plus months, she and I met over coffee, over lunch, at her house, and talked by phone as  taught me the ins-and-outs of organ donation. Then, I’d go home to plot out story threads and would bring my ideas back, to see if they made any kind of sense at all. Some did, some didn’t, but pretty soon, I had enough to write a cohesive novel.


But that didn’t mean Ami’s role was finished. Hardly! Once I’d written my story, I printed it out and brought it to her so she could read it and let me know if any inaccuracies had snuck in.


They had, so I moved to the rewrite phase and then asked her to read the revised novel. She did. Eventually, she and I were happy with our “final” (ha!) product, so, I sent it to my publisher—who wasn’t my publisher yet. And waited. And waited. And waited.


Two (?) years later, I received a contract offer, and then the real work of big-picture edits began.


Poor Ami. As I said, I’m pretty sure she was signing up for that morning years ago. But she stuck with, read, read, and reread the novel, and was incredibly patient with me, my plunders, and umpteen questions.


The woman deserves chocolate. Like a whole truckload full.

After God created man and woman, He called His creation good. When we are growing in our mother’s wombs, God knows us and makes plans for our lives. He makes us perfect, special, in His image.

  In my last post about "Change," we talked about changing the way we look at food, making new habits regarding our eating, and learning to daily rely on God, not ourselves.

 Another change God would have us make is the way we view ourselves. Yes, the tighter we hold the reins of control, the less success we have. The irony of serving the Lord is the more we release control to Him, the more control we have.

 You are special.

Another change God would have us make is how we view ourselves. We draw closer to God and begin to see things through His eyes. He sees us as His masterpiece.
When man tried to build a tower to the heavens at Babel, God stopped them by confusing their language. God Himself said that if He didn't stop man, they would succeed. He sees us as able to do anything. Look at the knowledge man has come up with in the last hundred years. Yes, man is unstoppable without God's intervention.

God wants what's best for us, so He steers us toward Him. Even the heavens cry out of His grandeur. The mountains and oceans remind us of a Higher Power able to help where we falter.

In Christ, we are precious and beautiful, whether we're underweight or obese, black or red, highly intelligent or slow. He loves us unconditionally. He longs to call us His children.

Remember, change the way you look at food.
Change the way you look at yourself.

With Christ, all things are possible, even losing a hundred pounds.

      Personally I hate change. It has been said that nothing is certain in life but taxes and change.

CHANGE Changes sweep through our lives, sometimes like a gentle breeze, other times like a tornado. Beginning to walk with God in the realm of weight loss (as well as other areas) will entail new habits, new ways of doing things, new mindsets -- Change.

FOOD ADDICTION The healing from food addiction comes by viewing food differently. No longer does God want us to see food as our comforter and friend. God wishes to change us so that we run to Him for those benefits.

Salvation brings hope.

Trusting in God brings peace.

Days started with prayer brings serenity.


SERENITY PRAYER The prayer of Francis of Assisi has been repeated many times through the years, especially the part known as the serenity prayer.


Lord, give me the serenity to accept the things I can not change; the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

  Notice even in that prayer, we speak of change. We must change the things we can.

NEW HABITS In the realm of weight loss, the change varies from gentle breeze to tornado and back again. It takes twenty-one days to form a habit, so if, with the Lord’s guidance, you’ve made the decision to eat a healthy breakfast, and you mess up on the fifth day, give yourself permission to be human. Start afresh. Aim for twenty-one days the next time. Ask God for His power.


GOOD CHANGES Remember, change can blow us to a new place, a more desired place. Though we resist it, we may be thankful when we’ve turned that corner.

Once my husband lost his job. It was devastating. He could see nothing good about the change, but it brought him into opening a business of his own in real estate. He’s been a realtor for thirty years and still loves the work. Unlike his previous job, he’s been able to go into semi-retirement with real estate, and that’s been a blessing to us both.

GOOD OR BAD HABITS The habits we formed during our overeating years were destructive, selfish, and demoralizing. Our new habits will build us up, draw us closer to God, and indwell us with serenity.

10 Daily Decisions for Weight Loss

We make decisions or choices in life. To accept the gift of God’s salvation is a decision.
So is deciding to follow Christ in weight loss. As we work on the mental, we also accept how that affects us spiritually and physically.

Here’s Writing with God's Hope blog's top ten daily decisions that we need to make to lose weight God's way.

1.                             Decide to begin your day with prayer, Bible reading, and meditation. If morning isn’t possible, do this as you end the day before.

2.                             Decide to disregard negative thinking and talking.

3.                             Decide to peruse books and online sites about submission to Christ especially in the realm of losing weight.

4.                             Decide to journal your highs and lows, maybe prayer requests and praise reports, or at least how you viewed eating that day.

5.                             Decide to make the attempt to choose healthier options and balanced food choices.

6.                             Decide to get in thirty minutes of activity five days a week.

7.                             Decide to not compare yourself with anyone else.

8.                             Decide to not dwell on “what-ifs,” but to live in gratitude for what God has provided.

9.                             Decide to believe God’s truth, not your circumstances.

10.                        Decide to forgive since resentment and anger will derail anyone's weight loss efforts.

Print out this list and make a commitment to do these things. I think you'll be surprised at the difference.
